Knowledge Base for Chemical Substances and Laboratory Techniques

Chemical Knowledge Base

The Rexar Knowledge Base provides technical background information on chemical substances, chemical identification, analytical techniques and laboratory documentation. The articles complement the product information, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), technical datasheets and Chemical Identity Cards available throughout our catalogue.

The Knowledge Base focuses on understanding and correctly interpreting chemical data. Topics include identification methods, different chemical forms, physicochemical properties and commonly used analytical techniques.

Chemical Identification

A chemical compound can be described using several identification systems. CAS Registry Numbers, PubChem CIDs, InChIKeys, SMILES notations, molecular formulas and systematic chemical names each serve a different purpose.

This section explains how these identifiers relate to one another, why different sources may sometimes report different information and how chemical identity can be systematically verified.

Analytical Techniques

Analytical techniques such as HPLC, LC-MS and NMR provide different types of information about a chemical substance. A measured purity value, for example, is not automatically equivalent to complete confirmation of chemical identity.

The Knowledge Base explains what different analytical methods are used for, what information they can provide and the limitations of individual techniques.

Chemical Forms and Properties

The form in which a chemical compound occurs can affect factors such as molecular weight, solubility, stability and the interpretation of analytical data.

Topics including free bases, hydrochloride and other salt forms, stereochemistry, hygroscopicity, molecular weight and storage conditions are discussed from a chemical and technical perspective.

Understanding Technical Documentation

Safety Data Sheets, technical datasheets and chemical identification records contain specialised information. This section explains how these documents are structured and how information such as CAS numbers, molecular formulas, molecular weights, hazard classifications and storage information can be interpreted.

Technical documents for individual Rexar products are available through our Technical Documentation page.

The Rexar Knowledge Base is gradually expanded with new technical articles and reference information on chemical identification, analysis and laboratory techniques.
