A Technical Data Sheet, commonly abbreviated as TDS, is a technical product document that summarizes the main properties, specifications and characteristics of a material. Its purpose is to provide a clear overview of what the product is from a technical perspective and which properties are relevant.
A TDS is generally broader than a Certificate of Analysis (CoA). While a CoA usually relates to a specific batch, a TDS mainly describes typical or specified properties of the product as a whole.

A useful TDS contains enough information to identify the material unambiguously. A CAS number is often a valuable reference, but it should be considered together with the chemical name and other identifying data. For substances that exist as different salts, hydrates, solvates or stereochemical forms, a name alone may not be sufficient.
Molecular formula and molar mass can also help verify whether the described form matches the intended material. This is particularly relevant when comparing free bases and salts, where molar masses may differ substantially.
If a TDS states a purity value, it usually represents a general product specification or a typical value. The document does not automatically demonstrate the measured purity of a particular batch.
For batch-specific analytical results, a CoA is generally the more appropriate document. A TDS might state that a product has a specification of ≥98%, while the corresponding CoA reports the actual measured result for a specific lot.
Some Technical Data Sheets mention analytical techniques used for product characterization or quality control. These may include HPLC, LC-MS, NMR, FTIR or other suitable methods. The presence of a method on a TDS does not necessarily mean that every batch has been tested by every listed technique.
It is therefore important to distinguish between general technical product information and batch-specific analytical results.
A TDS, SDS and CoA each serve a different purpose. A TDS describes technical product properties and specifications. An SDS focuses on hazards, safe handling, storage, transport and emergency measures. A CoA reports analytical methods and measured results for a specific batch or lot.
These documents therefore complement one another. The TDS helps explain what the product is technically expected to be, the SDS how it should be handled safely, and the CoA what was actually measured for a particular batch.
A practical review begins by checking whether the document clearly identifies the product. Next, determine whether values are presented as typical or as specifications, whether the chemical form is unambiguous, which physicochemical properties are given and whether the important data are internally consistent.
The date of the document is also relevant. Product specifications can change over time. A version number, revision date or issue date therefore helps determine which technical information is current.
A Technical Data Sheet is an important technical reference document for the general properties and specifications of a material. It should not be viewed as a replacement for an SDS or a batch-specific CoA. Used together, these documents provide a more complete view of product identity, technical properties, safety information and analytical quality.
