Wat is een Certificate of Analysis (CoA)?

A Certificate of Analysis, usually abbreviated as CoA, is a document that records analytical results for a specific batch or lot of a material. It brings together test data, specifications and traceability information in a structured form. A CoA therefore differs from a general product description: it normally relates to a particular manufactured, packaged or tested lot.

Identity and purity are different questions

Identity and purity are not the same analytical question. A method may provide strong evidence that a sample contains the intended compound without automatically establishing a particular percentage purity.

Techniques such as LC-MS, NMR, FTIR and chromatographic methods provide different types of information. LC-MS can provide chromatographic and mass-related information. NMR can be highly informative for structural confirmation. HPLC or another chromatographic method may be used to estimate relative purity, but the result must be interpreted in the context of the method, detector, integration procedure and reference materials used.

What does a purity percentage mean?

A percentage on a CoA may appear straightforward, but its meaning depends on how it was determined. A result such as 99.2% may, for example, represent a chromatographic area percentage. That is not automatically equivalent to 99.2% by mass of a single chemical component. Water, residual solvents, inorganic salts or components that respond differently to the selected detector may affect interpretation.

For this reason, a percentage without information about the analytical method is less informative than the same number accompanied by a clear method description. In technical evaluation, the method, specification and measurement context are at least as important as the numerical result.

Why does the batch number matter?

A CoA is most useful when it can be linked to the actual material being evaluated. The batch or lot number is the main traceability link. If the material carries a batch number on its label, that number should preferably correspond with the batch number shown on the certificate.

A generic certificate without a clear batch link may still contain useful product information, but it provides less evidence that the reported results apply specifically to the material in hand.

How can a CoA be evaluated critically?

A practical review starts with a few basic questions. Is it clear which material was tested? Is a batch number present? Is the analytical method stated? Are actual measured results shown, or only specification limits? Are units clear? And does the selected method support the conclusion being made?

The origin of the document also matters. An internal supplier certificate, a report from an independent laboratory and a certificate issued by the original manufacturer can all be useful, but they do not necessarily provide the same level of independence or detail.

CoA, SDS and Technical Data Sheet

A CoA should not be confused with a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or a Technical Data Sheet (TDS). An SDS primarily covers hazards, safe handling, storage, transport and emergency measures. A TDS generally describes technical properties and product specifications. A CoA, by contrast, reports analytical results that may be linked to a specific batch.

Its value is not determined simply by the existence of a certificate or by a single purity percentage.
