Molecular formula

The molecular formula states which elements are present and how many atoms of each element occur. It describes composition but not necessarily structure.

Molar mass

Molar mass is the mass of one mole of a substance, usually expressed in grams per mole. It is calculated from the atomic masses in the formula.

Checking consistency

Formula and molar mass should agree. A discrepancy may indicate a salt form, hydrate, solvate, counterion or an identity error.

Free base and salt

In a salt, the counterion is part of the composition and changes the molar mass. Free base and salt should therefore not be treated as the same chemical form.

What a formula can and cannot tell you

A molecular formula gives elemental composition, but different structures can share the same formula. It therefore narrows identity without uniquely defining connectivity, stereochemistry or physical form.

Calculating molar mass

Molar mass is obtained by multiplying the number of atoms of each element by its standard atomic weight and summing the contributions. Published values can differ slightly because of rounding conventions and the atomic-weight values used.

Why discrepancies are useful clues

A formula and molar mass that do not mathematically correspond deserve attention. Sometimes the explanation is simple rounding; larger differences can reveal that one source describes a salt, solvate or hydrate while another describes the parent molecule.

Counterions and solvates

Hydrochloride, sodium and other salts add atoms and mass. Hydrates and solvates can likewise alter the stated formula depending on whether the associated molecules are included explicitly. The chemical name should make the convention clear.

Molecular weight versus exact mass

Average molar mass and monoisotopic exact mass are related but different quantities. Mass spectrometry often deals with exact masses or m/z values, so these should not be confused with the rounded molar mass printed on a datasheet.

Cross-checking identity data

A robust identity check compares name, CAS number, formula, molar mass and structural identifiers. Agreement does not replace analytical testing, but disagreement is a useful warning that the documentation may combine data from different chemical forms.

Why measurement context matters

Analytical data cannot be separated completely from the conditions under which they were produced. Instrument settings, sample preparation, reference materials, calibration and data processing can all influence the final result. Two values that look identical at first glance may therefore not carry exactly the same analytical meaning. When documents are compared, the method and the definition of the reported value matter just as much as the final number.

Reference materials and comparison

A reliable reference material can help compare analytical observations with a known substance. Its value depends on the question being asked: retention behaviour, a spectrum or another characteristic can provide strong support under controlled conditions. Reference comparison does not replace critical review of the complete dataset. The identity of the reference, the method used and the similarity of measurement conditions determine how strong the comparison really is.

Quality of analytical data

A technically convincing result consists of more than a percentage or one prominent signal. Clear sample identification, interpretable raw or derived data, logical specifications and a suitable analytical method make a result easier to assess. Internal consistency also matters: chemical name, formula, molar mass, batch information and analytical conclusion should not contradict one another. Where different elements do not align, further verification is preferable to treating one favourable value as decisive.

Place within technical documentation

Information has different functions in an SDS, Technical Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis. An SDS primarily addresses safety and hazard information, a TDS describes technical characteristics, and a CoA generally reports results for a specific batch. Analytical information has the right meaning only when it is clear which document contains it, which material or batch it concerns, and whether it is a specification, typical value or actual measured result.
